This is a picture of Katniss from the movie.

One word to describe Katniss Everdeen is adventurous. She does what she needs to stay alive and keep her family in good shape. She doesn't stick to the norm, making her unique and interesting. In addition, there are three main qualities that help her incredibly in the arena. First, she is smart. Her brains help her advance and outwit the other contestants, leaving her close to last. If she was not as smart as she is, she would have died very early on in the Games. Second, she is amazing at shooting a bow and arrow. This helps her survive in the arena because she is able to hunt all the food she needs. Her third saving trait in the arena is her ability to kill humans when in need. Peeta would not have made it as far without Katniss because he cannot kill another human being. Katniss knows that in the Hunger Games, you need to be able to take out the opponents, and nothing will stop her.

Peeta Mellark is the second tribute from District 12, in addition to Katniss. He stays alive by charming the sponsors to give him the necessary items for his survival. He did this by making Katniss his lover. In addition, Peeta is a very ethical person. He doesn't want to be in the hunger games just for Panem, he wants to be remembered, and doesn't want to just be "a piece in their game." He is also very trustworthy. There are many instances in the book where Katniss lays all her trust on him, and vice versa as well.

This is a picture of Prim form the movie.

Primrose Everdeen is a small, innocent tween, known as Prim, and is the most special person in Katniss's life. After Katniss and Prim's father died in a mining accident, and their mom goes absent-minded, Katniss and Prim, sisters, are left basically on their own. At the reaping, Prim's name is in the drawing once, while many of the other children's are there more than 20. Against the incredible odds, Prim's name gets chosen, and unable to see her sister leave only to die, is so unbearable and Katniss volunteers Prim's place.

In the Hunger Games, Katniss's best friend is Gale Hawthorne. He, like Katniss, is adventurous. Every week, the pair sneaks under the hole in the fence surrounding District 12 (where they live, in the country of Panem) and shoot animals to eat. He is also generous, because when Katniss is about to sent off to the games, he promises her that he will not let her family starve. But, he is also a little bit jealous of the relationship between Peeta and Katniss. Many times throughout the book, you get a sense that Gale is watching the Hunger Games televised and watching Katniss and Peeta kissing, and he gets a jealous.

This is a picture of Rue from the movie.

Katniss was quick to make an alliance with Rue when she saved her life and helped her kill a career tribute. Rue reminds Katniss of Prim, which is another reason she was drawn to her. Rue was also petite, and around the same age. Rue was very resourceful, which was key to her survival until *spoiler alert* she was stabbed and killed by another tribute.
